Ottawa has an education system that is unsurpassed. The region has five universities, two colleges and numerous technology institutes and professional schools to create a highly integrated and flexible education and training delivery system that is conducive to lifelong learning.

Post-secondary education is extremely important in Ottawa’s knowledge based economy. Over 90,000 students enrolled in post-secondary education in 2009; 79 per cent enrolled in university and 21 per cent in college. Nearly 40 per cent of Ottawa Citizens have a graduate certificate, diploma or degree. Ottawa graduates the highest number of computer science and engineering graduates in Canada. In 2009, the largest faculty enrollment at the Ottawa region's universities was within the faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (25,554 students; 36.55 per cent) followed by enrollments in the faculty of Business (8,376 students; 11.98 per cent), and the faculty of Public Affairs (7,110 students; 10.17 per cent) in the second and third places respectively.
 
As part of the ongoing talent development strategy for the region, a high priority is given to encourage students to enroll in post-secondary science and technology programs. Total enrollment in science and technology programs in the Ottawa region universities has increased by 29.8 per cent since 2003. In 2009 alone, the total enrollment at the region's universities increased by 4.27 per cent over the previous year. This overall trend as been reassuring for Ottawa and will help in confirming the region as a global high tech centre.

Ottawa Educational Institutions

The University of Ottawa has held a unique place on the Canadian academic map from its inception in 1848. It is the oldest and largest bilingual university in North America. The University of Ottawa is a comprehensive, research-intensive, cosmopolitan university offering over 300 undergraduate programs and close to 160 graduate programs in English and French to over 30,000 students from a variety of cultural heritages, many of whom come from other countries on all five continents. The University's nine faculties, all offering graduate or professional programs, include Administration, Arts, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Law (Common and Civil), Medicine, Science, and Social Sciences.They offer students collaborative research projects and student-exchange programs through some 140 bilateral agreements with sister universities in close to 50 countries. The University offers a multicultural environment by welcoming students and professors from virtually every continent and encourage them to gain new experiences by taking part in the many international, government and cultural events staged in our own backyard, the nation's capital.

Since 1942, Carleton University has provided a lively and rewarding educational experience for hundreds of thousands of students from Canada and around the world. Situated on a campus bordered by the Rideau River and Canal, Carleton is just minutes from the heart of Ottawa's government and enjoys easy access to the many organizations, associations and businesses which thrive in Ottawa. Many of Ontario’s leading high tech companies surround the campus where cutting-edge research joins with highly innovative teaching to solve real-life problems. Carleton offers 65 programs of study to students who hail from every province and from over 100 countries around the world. These programs are in areas as diverse as public affairs, journalism, film studies, engineering, high technology and international studies.  More than 2,000 professors and staff members serve 23,000 students. Carleton’s creative, interdisciplinary and international approach to research has led to many significant discoveries and creative works in science and technology, business, governance, public policy and the arts.

The presence of two major universities in the city has lead to collaborative programs that link both universities. Many programs allow students to use facilities at both universities, enabling them to gain maximum benefit from their education.
 
Algonquin College of Applied Arts & Technology is a multi-faceted institution providing high quality, career-oriented education and training. Algonquin offers a variety of full-time post-secondary programs that span a number of industries. Through more than 80 advisory committees with over 800 members representing business, industry and government, the College is able to ensure its programs remain current and relevant to the needs of today's marketplace.

Located in Ottawa, La Cité collégiale is Canada’s largest French-language college outside of Quebec. Each year, about 10,000 students from across Canada and from different countries choose La Cité collégiale for practical training that meets job market demands. Of theses, some 3,500 are full-time students enrolled in the College’s 70 full-time programs.

The Ottawa emphasis on life long learning is reinforced by a dynamic business and technology sector that works in partnership with our educational institutions through numerous agencies, foundations and initiatives to ensure that the system meets the needs of industry through creative and timely programs that are focused on both today's needs, and those of the future.
