Ottawa has an education system that is unsurpassed. The region has four universities, two colleges and numerous technology institutes and professional schools to create a highly integrated and flexible education and training delivery system that is conducive to lifelong learning.

Boasting the highest educated population in Canada, post secondary education is extremely important in Ottawas knowledge based economy. Over 80,000 students enrolled in post-secondary education in 2005; 65% enrolled in university and 35% in college. Nearly 40% of Ottawa Citizens have a graduate certificate, diploma or degree. Ottawa graduates the highest number of computer science and engineering graduates in Canada, and also has the highest concentration of PhDs in North America tied with Boston.
For university enrolment in 2005, Engineering and Architecture has the second highest enrolment next to the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, this provides much support and development for our high tech industries. Additionally, Business and Sciences have very high enrolment. The 2005, college enrolments were highest in Business and Hospitality


The University of Ottawa has held a unique place on the Canadian academic map from its inception in 1848. It is the oldest and largest bilingual university in North America. The University of Ottawa is a comprehensive, research-intensive, cosmopolitan university offering a wide variety of programs in English and French to over 23,000 students from a variety of cultural heritages, many of whom come from other countries on all five continents. The University's nine faculties, all offering graduate or professional programs, include Administration, Arts, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Law (Common and Civil), Medicine, Science, and Social Sciences.
Since 1942, Carleton University has provided a lively and rewarding educational experience for hundreds of thousands of students from Canada and around the world. A recognized educational leader in the study of high technology, public affairs and management, and a leading innovator of undergraduate education, Carleton University offers outstanding programs in both undergraduate and graduate studies in the major disciplines of the Arts and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering.
The presence of two major universities in the city has lead to collaborative programs that link both universities. Many programs allow students to use facilities at both universities, enabling them to gain maximum benefit from their education.
Algonquin College of Applied Arts & Technology is a multi-faceted institution providing high quality, career-oriented education and training. Algonquin offers a variety of full-time post-secondary programs that span a number of industries. Through more than 80 advisory committees with over 800 members representing business, industry and government, the College is able to ensure its programs remain current and relevant to the needs of today's marketplace.
Located in Ottawa, La Cité collégiale is Canadas largest French-language college outside of Quebec. Each year, about 10,000 students from across Canada and from different countries choose La Cité collégiale for practical training that meets job market demands. Of theses, some 3,500 are full-time students enrolled in the Colleges 70 full-time programs.
