The City has a mandate to provide solid waste management services to the residential sector of the City of Ottawa. The Integrated Waste Management Master Plan (IWMMP) provides direction for optimizing the current and future residential solid waste programs to best meet the financial, environmental and sustainability needs of the City of Ottawa over the next twenty years. Below are some programs brought forth by the city of Ottawa to attain these goals.
RETHINK GARBAGE
That's the first step in reducing what goes to Ottawa's landfills. The next is to reuse and recycle more often. The RETHINK GARBAGE campaign will provide the information and resources that may be needed to help Ottawa residents take these two simple steps. TALKIN' TRASH
This nine-minute video was produced by the City of Ottawa for local elementary schools, specifically for Junior Kindergarten to 8. Talkin' Trash looks behind the scenes at Ottawa's garbage situation. The video encourages students to RETHINK GARBAGE, from how much they create to the choices they make each day around its disposal. The video demonstrates why sending unwanted "stuff" to the landfill should always be a last resort. Follow this link for more information: Talkin' Trash - Ottawa
Ottawa companies also offer alternatives to encourage sustainability in waste management. Plasco Energy Group's technology can eliminate environmental effects of municipal solid waste and can deliver clear electricity directly to the urban centers that produce the waste.
