Ottawa's corporate community has a proud, rich history that can be traced back to the early efforts of a small group of companies, two of which are Bell Northern Research (now Nortel Networks), and Computing Devices Canada (now General Dynamics Canada). Together, these two trailblazers helped sow the seeds of opportunity for a host of private-sector organizations.
According to Research Infosource, 27 of the Top 100 Corporate R&D Spenders in Canada, are companies established in Ottawa. Additionally, 27 per cent of the total R&D expenditures from those top 100 companies is spent here in Ottawa.
Many of Canadas top corporate R&D spenders have research and development facilities in Ottawa; these firms include Nortel Networks, Bell Canada, and IBM Canada. Additionally, Ottawa is home to the R&D arms of several multinational companies including: March Networks, Alcatel Canada Inc., Cognos Incorporated, Zarlink Semiconductor Inc., Mitel Networks Corporation, and Cisco Systems.
