Less than a decade ago, venture capital companies had virtually no presence in the city. Today, more than a dozen firms work from Ottawa, often teaming up with the increasing number of foreign partners who want to invest here. Since 1995 Ottawa has attracted over 50% of all incoming venture capital to Canada; exemplifying Ottawa's entrepreneurial spirit. The total amount of venture capital invested in Ottawa technology companies over the last decade amounted to over $4.3 billion CDN.
The Regional Innovation Center (RIC) is one of the programs of the Ottawa Center for Regional Innovation (OCRI). The RIC can assists qualified companies seeking debt and equity financing to help build success. Before companies begin trying to raise funds, it is important to determine what the best capitalization strategy is and the message management needs to articulate to investors. Through the business advisors and mentors, companies can gain access to resources with expertise in this area that can help to build a strategy and provide regular feedback. The RIC works with national and international investors and will connect investor-ready companies through referrals or introductions. This process is quite selective and is handled on a company-by-company basis.
